THIRD CONDITIONAL DRILLS

DRILL 1:

1. You didn't study so you didn't pass the test.

Yes but, if I had studied, I would have passed the test.

2. You ate a lot. You had a stomach ache all afternoon. 

Yes but, if I hadn't eaten a lot, I wouldn't have had a stomach ache all afternoon. 

3. You didn't run so you missed the train. 

Yes but, if I had run, I wouldn't have missed the train.

4. He arrived late so he missed the beginning of the film. 

Yes but, if he hadn't arrived late, he wouldn't have missed the beginning of the film. 

5. She was ill, so she didn't go to school. 

Yes but, if she hadn't been ill, she would have gone to school.

6. They came to the party, so we saw them. 

Yes but, if they hadn't come to the party, we wouldn't have seen them. 

7. I finished all my homework, so I took a rest. 

Yes but, if you hadn't finished your homework, you wouldn't have taken a rest. 

8. It was her birthday, so I made a cake. 

Yes but, if it hadn't been her birthday, you wouldn't have made a cake. 

9. I argued with my friends, so I went back home early.

Yes but, if you hadn't argued with your friends, you wouldn't have gone back home early. 

10. You didn't sleep much, so you looked knackered. 

Yes but, if I had slept more, I wouldn't have looked knackered. 

DRILL 2:

I didn't call you because my telephone was dead. 

Oh!, so you are saying you would have called me, if your telephone hadn't died. 

2. I broke the vase because I run into the living room. 

Oh!, so you are saying you wouldn't have broken the vase, if you hadn't run into the kitchen.

3. I didn't do my homework because I didn't have time. 

Oh!, so you are saying you would have done your homework, if you had had time. 

4. I didn't say hello because I didn't see you. 

Oh!, so you are saying you would have said hello, if you had seen me. 

5. He forgot the keys because he was in a hurry. 

Oh!, so you are saying he wouldn't have forgotten the keys, if he hadn't been in a hurry. 

6. I missed the train because I didn't  run to catch it. 

Oh!, so you are saying you would have fought the train, if you had run. 

7. We didn't say anything because our parents were there. 

Oh!, so you are saying you would have said something if your parents hadn't been there. 

8. You made a mistake because you did not read the essay question properly. 

Oh!, so you are saying I wouldn't have made a mistake, if I had read the essay question properly. 

9. They rang because they needed some money. 

Oh!, so you are saying they wouldn't have rung, if hadn't needed money. 

10. I told you the secret because you were my best friend. 

Oh!, so you wouldn't have told me, if I hadn't been your best friend.
